FREETOWN – Sierra Leone has been ranked among African countries with the highest fuel prices in May 2026, recording $1.779 per liter, according to a report by Business Insider Africa.
The data, sourced from Global PetrolPrices, places Sierra Leone at 5th in Africa and 51st globally. The country also holds the highest fuel price in West Africa, surpassing Senegal which recorded $1.653 per liter.
Malawi tops the African list with $3.832 per liter, ranking 2nd globally. Zimbabwe follows with $2.080, while Rwanda ranks third on the continent at $2.010.
The report indicates that global fuel prices edged higher month-on-month, rising from an average of $1.48 to $1.51 per liter worldwide.
While Malawi and Zimbabwe saw a decline in fuel prices, other countries including Rwanda, the Central African Republic, and Senegal recorded increases, reflecting continued pressure in parts of the region.
A reshuffle in the global top 10 fuel price rankings occurred, with Cabo Verde, Tanzania, Seychelles, and South Africa entering the list, replacing Morocco, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Cameroon.
