National Civil Registration Authority Reports 306,057 Births, 17,905 Deaths in 2025

Freetown — Sierra Leone recorded 306,057 live births and 17,905 deaths in 2025, according to the National Civil Registration Authority’s provisional annual report on vital events for the year ending 31 December 2025.

The report shows that of the total live births registered, 156,089 were females (51%) and 149,968 were males (49%), giving a sex ratio of 96. In addition, the Authority recorded 3,739 stillbirths nationwide during the year.

 

On mortality, 10,280 males (57%) and 7,625 females (43%) were recorded as deaths. The highest number of deaths occurred among persons aged 60 years and above, accounting for 32 percent, followed by children aged 0–4 years, who made up 15 percent of the total.

Marriage registrations stood at 755 in 2025. Christian marriages accounted for the majority, followed by Islamic, civil and customary marriages. The Authority also recorded 60 divorces during the period, with civil marriages representing the largest share, alongside Christian and Islamic unions.

The report further indicates that 160 adoption cases were registered across the country. Females accounted for 62 percent of the adopted children, while males made up 38 percent. Most of the adoption cases involved children aged 13–17 years, followed by those aged 5–12 years.

Covering the period from January to December 2025, the NCRA said the provisional figures highlight the importance of timely registration of births, deaths, marriages, divorces and adoptions, and called on citizens and residents to continue complying with the country’s civil registration laws to ensure accurate population records.
