Freetown, Sierra Leone – Parliament will debate and vote on the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Amendment) Act, 2025, on Tuesday, 28th July 2026.
Attorney General and Minister of Justice Alpha Sesay will pilot the Bill through its second and third readings ahead of the parliamentary vote.
The proposed legislation stems from recommendations in the Justice Cowan Constitutional Review Report and the Tripartite Committee, which addressed long-standing governance gaps. The amendments focus on electoral management, transition safeguards, and political representation. Pre-legislative hearings commenced at Parliament in Tower Hill, Freetown, in January 2026.
The Bill has been gazetted and copies distributed to Members of Parliament. The process has faced procedural questions from opposition lawmakers regarding compliance with Section 108 of the Constitution, which requires constitutional amendment Bills to be published in the official Gazette at least twice, with a minimum of nine days between publications.
The amendment requires the support of a two-thirds majority of Members of Parliament to pass into law, in accordance with the Constitution and the Standing Orders of Parliament.
