The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has arrested a man after he was allegedly found in possession of an unlicensed pistol loaded with 16 rounds of live ammunition during a routine checkpoint operation at Waterloo.
The suspect, identified as Tejan Jabbie of New London, Kossoh Town in Freetown, was arrested on Tuesday by officers attached to the Waterloo Police Division.
According to police, the operation was conducted at the Waterloo Checkpoint under the leadership of the Local Unit Commander, Superintendent Bankolay Mansaray.
Police said Jabbie was travelling in a vehicle bearing registration number ARQ 600 when officers carried out a search and allegedly recovered the firearm and 16 rounds of live ammunition.
The suspect was subsequently taken into custody, while the recovered pistol and ammunition were handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for further investigation.
The Sierra Leone Police said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged possession of the firearm and whether any offences under the country’s firearms laws have been committed.
Reaffirming the division’s commitment to public safety, the Local Unit Commander said the Waterloo Police Division will continue to strengthen checkpoint operations to curb the movement of illegal firearms, combat crime, and enhance security across the country.
