Freetown – The Citizens Advocacy Network has formally notified the Sierra Leone Police of its intention to hold a peaceful protest and procession on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, over Parliament’s handling of the constitutional amendment process.

In a letter dated August 17, 2026, addressed to Inspector-General of Police William Fayia Sellu, CAN said the protest is intended to provide citizens a platform to express disapproval of what it considers Parliament’s violation of prescribed constitutional provisions in amending the 1991 Constitution.

The group also intends to petition President Julius Maada Bio on the matter.

The procession will assemble at Lumley Beach and proceed through Stadium Car Park, Savage Street, St. John, Sanders Street, Siaka Stevens Street, and end at State House.

CAN stated that the protest and procession will be peaceful, orderly and non-violent, and that participants will be encouraged to respect the law, public and private property, and security personnel.

The notification is made pursuant to Section 17(1) of the Public Order Act, 1965, which requires any person intending to organize a procession to notify the Commissioner of Police in writing.

CAN requested the Police to make appropriate arrangements for crowd management, traffic control, public safety and emergency access.

The letter was copied to the Speaker of Parliament, the Attorney-General, the Human Rights Commission, the UN Resident Coordinator, and various diplomatic missions, among others.
