British-Nigerian heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has been injured in a serious road accident in southwest Nigeria that claimed the lives of two people, authorities and international news outlets report.

The crash occurred on Monday morning on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, a major highway linking Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos, with the southwest region. Police and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua was involved in a collision with a stationary truck after it lost control while overtaking.

Local authorities confirmed that Joshua, 36, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Two other occupants in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, while others escaped with varying injuries.

Photos and videos circulating on social media and shared by international outlets showed bystanders and emergency responders helping a visibly shaken Joshua from the wreckage. Jason coverage noted he appeared dazed but conscious as he was assisted from the damaged vehicle.

The incident happened just days after Joshua’s high-profile knockout win over Jake Paul on 19 December in Miami, a fight streamed worldwide. Reports say Joshua was in Nigeria visiting family and attending to personal matters when the accident occurred.

Police said investigations into the cause of the collision are ongoing, and cited speeding and loss of control as potential factors. The identities of the people who died have not been officially released.

International reactions to the crash have flooded social media, with fans and fellow athletes expressing shock and condolence for the victims’ families.
