Ministry Investigates Assault of Factory Worker at KK Company in Waterloo

The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security has launched an investigation into the alleged assault of a factory worker at KK Company in Waterloo, following a complaint that sparked public concern.

 

According to a press release dated 16 June 2026, the incident involved Mr. Algassimu Barrie, a worker at the company, who was allegedly kicked by a Chinese employee identified as Lin Zhang. Management confirmed that the assault followed an accusation that Mr. Barrie had stolen drinks from the company. The Ministry also noted that other physical injuries sustained by Mr. Barrie were allegedly inflicted by local security personnel.

The Ministry strongly condemned all forms of violence and harassment in the workplace, stressing that disciplinary actions against employees must be carried out in line with Sierra Leone’s labour laws and internationally accepted standards.

While police investigations continue, the Ministry announced the following resolutions:

· The Chinese employee, Lin Zhang, has been repatriated with immediate effect and permanently banned from returning to Sierra Leone in connection with the company’s operations.
· Investigations into the conduct of the local security personnel are ongoing, with the Ministry warning that anyone found culpable will face legal action.
· The Ministry will continue to monitor the company’s compliance with occupational safety, health, and labour standards.

The Ministry further warned that acts of violence, abuse, or mistreatment of workers would not be tolerated, while reassuring employees that their rights and safety remain protected under the law.

“The Government stands ready to take decisive action whenever such rights are violated,” the statement read, adding that it remains committed to creating an enabling environment for investors to thrive.
