The Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone (IRCSL) has strongly condemned a reported same-sex marriage between two women that recently went viral online.
In a statement issued by its General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Usman Jesse Fornah, the Council said Sierra Leone does not recognize or condone same-sex unions, stressing that both Christianity and Islam define marriage strictly as a sacred union between a man and a woman.
The IRCSL described the incident as a contradiction to the nation’s cultural, moral, and spiritual values, while emphasizing the need to preserve peace, tolerance, and coexistence without disregarding national laws and religious traditions.
The Council also clarified that no Imam within its membership was involved in the ceremony, following an internal investigation. It has called on relevant authorities to investigate the matter and take necessary action under Sierra Leone’s laws.
The statement concluded by urging religious leaders to remain faithful to the Council’s principles and reaffirmed its commitment to work with government, civil society, and communities to protect the nation’s moral integrity.
