The Ministry of Transport and Aviation has announced revised fares for sea transportation between Freetown and Lungi, following the recent increase in the pump price of fuel from NLe 25.00 to NLe 28.50 per litre.
According to a statement from the Ministry, the new ferry fares, effective Wednesday, 28 January 2026, reflect a 14% increase across passenger and vehicle categories.
Under the new structure, first-class tickets will rise from NLe 42.30 to NLe 48.22, while second-class tickets will increase from NLe 22.90 to NLe 26.11. Vehicle fares have also been adjusted: vans and jeeps will now pay NLe 209.99 (up from NLe 184.20), cars NLe 174.65 (up from NLe 153.20), and coaches ranging from below 25 seats to above 42 seats will see increases from NLe 194β489.10 to NLe 221.16β557.57.
Other notable adjustments include motorbikes at NLe 49.36, tricycles at NLe 142.61, bicycles at NLe 26.79, and buses such as TATA at NLe 915.08. Student passengers in uniform will continue to travel for free, while fares for trucks, trailers, and luggage remain negotiable.
The Ministry stated that the fare adjustments were agreed upon in collaboration with ferry operators to reflect the rising cost of fuel while maintaining continued sea transport services between Freetown and Lungi.
