The Office of the President has formally notified leaders of registered political parties of President Julius Maada Bio’s intention to appoint Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL).
According to a letter dated 4th February 2026 from State House, the proposed appointment is in line with Section 33(1) of the 1991 Constitution (Act No. 6 of 1991), which mandates that members of the Electoral Commission are appointed by the President after consultation with leaders of all registered political parties and subject to parliamentary approval.
The correspondence requests political party leaders to submit their views on the proposed appointment within three working days from the date of the letter.
The letter, signed by the Secretary to the President, Barba B. Fortune, was addressed to chairpersons of all registered political parties, including the All People’s Congress (APC) and other political organizations.
