GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES FEBRUARY FISHING BAN FOR ARTISANAL SECTOR

The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has announced that the artisanal fisheries subsector will observe a closed fishing season from 1 to 28 February 2026. The measure is aimed at conserving fish stocks, allowing them to spawn, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of Sierra Leone’s fisheries.

The Ministry explained that while industrial fishing companies have previously observed seasonal closures, this will be the first official nationwide closed season for artisanal fishers, who make up about 70% of the country’s fishing population. Starting midnight 31 January 2026, all fishing canoes are to remain at their landing sites.

To ensure compliance, the Ministry will work with the Joint Maritime Committee, Sierra Leone Navy, Police, Office of National Security, Maritime Administration, and artisanal fishing associations. Violations will attract strict sanctions, including forfeiture of fish, engines, fishing equipment, and heavy fines.

The Ministry assured the public that arrangements have been made with industrial fishing companies to maintain a steady supply of fish in the market during the closure. While the temporary halt may affect artisanal fishing households, the government emphasized that the measure protects livelihoods in the long run.

“The closed season is a short-term sacrifice for long-term gains—healthier fish stocks, stronger coastal communities, and a more resilient fisheries sector,” the Ministry said, appealing for full cooperation from all stakeholders.
