Sierra Leone has been listed among 75 countries affected by an indefinite U.S. suspension of immigrant visa processing, following a State Department directive that takes effect on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.

According to the State Department, the suspension affects applicants seeking permanent residency (Green Cards) from Sierra Leone and other listed nations as part of a broader review of screening procedures tied to the administration’s “Public Charge” policy. The policy aims to curb the entry of individuals judged likely to depend on U.S. government welfare programs.
The move does not apply to nonimmigrant visas, such as tourist, business, or student visas, which are currently not affected by the pause, the Department clarified.
U.S. authorities say the freeze will stay in place indefinitely while a comprehensive reassessment of vetting standards for the affected countries, including Sierra Leone, is carried out. The review is part of efforts to strengthen national security and ensure rigorous evaluation of long-term immigration applications.
The full list of impacted countries also includes major nations such as Nigeria, Russia, Brazil, and Egypt, underscoring the breadth of the policy shift. Affected applicants are advised to await further guidance from U.S. diplomatic missions on next steps and updated processing timelines.
