3rd February 2026 – The Port Loko Resident High Court Judge covering the Kambia Judicial District, Honourable Justice Sahr Elogima Kekura, has sentenced Mohamed Yillah to sixty (60) years in prison for the unlawful keeping of prohibited drugs, underscoring the serious public health consequences of drug abuse on Sierra Leonean youth.
Three defendants were arraigned before the High Court to face fifteen (15) counts, including unlawful possession, selling, and keeping of prohibited drugs. These offences are in violation of Sections 8(a) and 7(c) of the National Drugs Control Act, 2008 (Act No. 10 of 2008) and Regulations 15 of the Drugs and Substance Abuse, Public Emergency Regulations, 2024.
According to the particulars of the case, Mohamed Yillah, on 8th November 2025 at Bamoi Luma, Magbema Chiefdom, Kambia District, unlawfully kept and sold prohibited drugs without lawful authority, actions which the court noted pose significant risks to the health and wellbeing of young people in the region.
In delivering the judgment, Justice Kekura emphasized that drug abuse is not merely a criminal act but a serious public health concern. “The offences committed by the accused have far-reaching consequences on our youth, who are the future of this nation. The court must send a clear message that such activities will not be tolerated,” Justice Kekura stated.
The court’s ruling reflects Sierra Leone’s ongoing commitment to tackling drug-related crimes while protecting the health and safety of its citizens, particularly the vulnerable youth population.
Authorities have continued to urge communities to collaborate with law enforcement and public health agencies to curb the circulation of prohibited drugs and provide support for prevention and rehabilitation programs.
The sentencing of Mohamed Yillah serves as a stern warning that drug-related offences carry severe legal consequences and highlights the need for sustained efforts to address substance abuse and its impact on public health.
