LAWYERS MOVE COURT TO STOP CONTESTED BAR ASSOCIATION EGM

A group of lawyers, led by Augustine Sorie-Sengbe Marrah, has filed a motion at the High Court in Freetown seeking to prevent the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) from holding its Emergency General Meeting (EGM) on Wednesday, December 10, 2025. The motion requests an interim injunction, arguing that the EGM to elect Bar representatives to the General Legal Council (GLC) should not proceed while the legitimacy of the current SLBA executive is being challenged in court, as holding the election under disputed leadership could undermine the GLC’s credibility.

The motion, MISC. APP. 253/24, requests that the court grant an interim injunction preventing SLBA from proceeding with preparations or holding the EGM. It also calls for the current SLBA representatives on the GLC to remain in office until the matter is resolved.

This latest development highlights growing tensions within Sierra Leone’s legal community, as some lawyers break away from the SLBA to form the Lawyer’s Society Sierra Leone, citing governance and transparency concerns within the Bar.

The High Court hearing is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at Law Court No. 2, Siaka Stevens Street, Freetown. Legal observers say the outcome could reshape representation within the GLC and influence the future of professional governance in Sierra Leone.
