Sierra Leone’s National Public Health Agency (NPHA), working with the Ministry of Health, has launched an investigation into unexplained skin lesions reported among 28 schoolchildren aged 15 to 17 in Safroko-Limba Chiefdom, Bombali District.
A rapid response team of epidemiologists, infection prevention and control specialists, and laboratory scientists has been deployed to the area to determine the source of the symptoms and prevent further spread.
According to the NPHA, the team is conducting case investigations, tracing contacts, implementing immediate infection-control actions, and collecting samples for urgent laboratory testing in Freetown.
Public Advisory
Authorities are urging the public to remain calm and to report any unusual skin conditions—especially in children and adolescents—to the nearest health facility or via the 117 hotline. The NPHA also warns against self-medication and the use of traditional remedies for unexplained skin issues, noting that early reporting is critical.
While laboratory results are still pending, officials say there is no immediate cause for alarm, and the government is taking all necessary steps to identify, manage, and contain the situation.
The NPHA is calling for full community cooperation with health teams and adherence to any public health advice issued as investigations continue.
