SIERRA LEONE GOVERNMENT OPENS EAST WEST CORRIDORS TO EASE FREETOWN TRAFFIC GRIDLOCK

The Ministry of Transport and Aviation has announced the temporary opening of Freetown’s east and west corridors to all commercial passenger vehicles, which were initially prohibited from using those corridors.

According to the ministry, this move aims to “ease congestion, reduce travel delays, and minimize the transportation burden on commuters and businesses.”

The ministry has ordered that effective Wednesday, November 5th, 2025, the East-West transit route will operate under new, carefully managed traffic arrangements.

In a press release dated November 4, 2025, the ministry stated that the decision was made in collaboration with various groups within the transportation sector, including the Motor Drivers Union, the security sector, and other key transportation stakeholders, due to a lack of Waka Fine buses serving Freetown’s growing population.

In furtherance, Ministry has issued the following the directives targeting both stakeholders and commercial drivers within the sector.

I) That commercial motorbikes are not allowed to use the Central Business District (CBD):

II) That the Waka Fine bus stops are to be exclusively used by Waka Fine buses;

III) That the SLRSA and other transport stakeholders are to engage in massive sensitization campaigns in all the parks on the current traffic laws and regulations.
