The Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) had announced the end of the industrial action following series of extensive engagements with the government, which were presided over by Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh.
The strike, which began on September 8th, brought many schools to a standstill as educators demanded the government honour its financial commitments.
In a statement, the SLTU expressed its “profound thanks” to its members for their “solidarity,” which it said was crucial in pushing the government to address their grievances.
After series of comprehensive negotiations, SLTU has confirmed that government has paid schools subsidies for the second and third terms of the previous academic year, encouraging schools that have not received to report the matter urgently to the Unionβs stakeholders.
In addition, the Union also confirmed the reinstatement ofΒ 1,802 out of 4,662 teachers recently suspended from payroll. The union stated that they have been assured by the government that the reinstated teachers have already received pay for July and August, with the remaining 325 to be paid in September, including back pay.
Furthermore, the union has disclosed that a joint committee, coordinated by the Vice President’s office, has been established to resolve all outstanding issues. This committee, according to the Union Comprises of representatives from the Education and Finance ministries, the Teaching Service Commission, and the teachers’ union.
Finally, following an emergency meeting on Friday, September 12th, 2025, the SLTU and its groups have called off the strike action with immediate effect.
“We encourage teachers to return to their schools with effect from Monday 15th September, 2025,” the union’s statement read.
However, the return comes with a note of caution. The union has pledged to “effectively monitor” the ongoing payments to ensure the government’s promises are fulfilled for all eligible teachers.
The union has urged all members to consider to render diligent service to nation.
