The Government of Sierra Leone has clarified that citizens are not banned from travelling to or transiting through Guinea, provided they have valid travel documents and meet the required immigration and security conditions.
The clarification comes amid Guinea’s restrictions on Sierra Leonean migrants transiting through Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport as authorities intensify efforts to curb irregular migration and human trafficking.
According to the Government, Guinean authorities have raised concerns over irregular migration, suspected trafficking and unverified overseas employment arrangements.
Sierra Leoneans travelling abroad for employment have been urged to follow proper recruitment, labour and immigration procedures and verify job arrangements through the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security before departure.
Citizens have also been cautioned against using Guinea or other transit routes to bypass these procedures, which could expose them to trafficking, exploitation and fraudulent job offers.
The Government says it will continue engaging Guinean authorities and other partners to facilitate legitimate travel and protect Sierra Leonean citizens.
