Marampa Mines SL Limited in Sierra Leone says mounting operating expenses and difficult market conditions have prompted a decision to temporarily suspend its operations.

According to the company, a notice of temporary suspension has been submitted to the Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources.

The company said the decision was intended to protect the future of the business and strengthen its financial sustainability.

During the suspension, Marampa Mines SL Limited said it would retain the minimum staff required to maintain its operating licence, secure its assets and continue essential services, including power, water management, environmental protection and maintenance.

The company said it hoped to resume production when market conditions improved, supported by a more sustainable operating structure and lower costs.

Management is working on a controlled shutdown plan outlining how operations will be safely suspended and which activities and staffing arrangements will continue.

The company also said high fuel costs had limited its ability to secure additional supplies, making it necessary to conserve available fuel for essential services.

Marampa Mines SL Limited said organisational restructuring already under way would continue through the required processes. Employees directly affected by the changes would be informed through their heads of department and the Human Resources department.

The company has not specified when production will stop or how many employees might be affected. It said the timing of operational changes would depend on regulatory requirements and site readiness.

Management has urged employees to remain calm, avoid speculation and continue following safety procedures. It stressed that efforts to reduce costs must not compromise safety or the company’s obligations to employees, communities and the government.
