FREETOWN – Academic staff at Njala University have rejected a return-to-work request from the Chancellor, vowing to continue their industrial action until the administration and government provide a strong written commitment with timelines to address their demands.

In a press release issued on Monday, the Office of the Secretary General said the decision followed a plenary meeting held earlier that day to update members on the outcome of talks with the Chancellor and top Management of Administration.

The release stated that the plenary was informed of the Chancellor’s request to the executive to call off the industrial action and return to work on Monday, 12th October 2026.

However, the plenary mandated the executive to bring results before suspending the industrial action. It stated there should be a strong written commitment from the administration and government, with timelines, for the two demands of UASA to be addressed, noting that until that is done, the industrial action continues.

The plenary further resolved that any agreement reached with the authorities concerned should be written “in black and white” to the satisfaction of all parties. It added that the outcome of the meeting would be communicated to UASA, the umbrella body, for further action.

“While we await a constructive dialogue, we thank the Plenary of the Academic Staff Association of Njala University for their show of support for our welfare,” the release concluded.
