According to multiple sources, Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of criminal conspiracy in connection with the alleged illegal financing of his 2007 presidential campaign with funds from Libya, according to sources close to the court proceedings.
The 70-year-old, who served as France’s head of state from 2007 to 2012, was accused of receiving millions of euros in cash from the regime of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. According to judicial sources, the Paris court ruled that Sarkozy must begin serving his sentence immediately, even if he files an appeal.
The verdict is historic, marking the first time a former French president has been handed a custodial sentence over campaign financing linked to a foreign government. Sarkozy, once one of Europe’s most influential political figures, has consistently denied wrongdoing, describing the case as a “scandal” and a “stain on French justice.”
According to political analysts, the court emphasized that the seriousness of the charges undermined democratic values and the integrity of France’s political system.
Sarkozy, who once oversaw the justice system and prisons as president, will now see himself behind bars — a dramatic reversal for a man who was once one of the most powerful figures in Europe.
