In commemoration of World Environment Day on June 5, 2025, the Environment Protection Agency Sierra Leone (EPA-SL), in collaboration with Orange Sierra Leone, organized a Green Marathon to raise awareness about the growing plastic pollution crisis in the country.

The event brought together members of the public and key stakeholders for a symbolic green walk from the historic Cotton Tree in Freetown to the Kallon Car Park at Aberdeen Beach. The marathon aimed not only to promote fitness and unity but also to educate, advocate, and inspire collective action towards reducing plastic usage in Sierra Leone.

The program featured remarks from various stakeholders who shared their insights and commitment to tackling plastic pollution. They emphasized the urgent need for robust policies and public education to combat the increasing threat of waterborne plastics in our environment.

A representative from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change highlighted ongoing efforts since 2021 in partnership with the World Bank under the Resilient Urban Sierra Leone Project. Notably, on March 15, 2023, a comprehensive policy on plastic pollution was introduced, aiming to eliminate plastic waste and foster sustainable environmental development.

The EPA-SL concluded the event with a powerful message:

> “If we do not act now to inspire others about the dangers of plastic pollution, it will become a problem for all Sierra Leoneans. We need collective commitment to secure a healthier Sierra Leone and a healthier planet.”

This Green Marathon served as a reminder that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility—and together, we can make a difference.
