On February 8, 2025, the Sierra Leone People’s Party kicked off its lower-level elections across several districts, including Tonkolili and Kenema.

The purpose of the lower-level elections is to elect party leadership across various levels and it is scheduled to run till March 8, 2025.

However, following the elections in Gorama Mende Chiefdom, Kenema District, there have been videos and pictures circulating on social media  depicting chaotic scenes of unrest.

According to sources, numerous people were left injured, structures were destroyed, and residents facing intimidation as a result of the violence.

In response to the violence, the leadership of the party to issue a press release expressing dismay over the display of violence and misconduct during these elections.

In the statement, the party’s National Secretary General, Umaru Napoleon-Koroma commended the work of the PPRC, the party executives, and everyone involved in the election process. He noted that the dedication of these individuals to conduct an impartial and fair election embodies the true essence of the SLPP.

The party leadership strongly condemns the acts of violence demonstrated during these elections, highlighting that such behaviour is contrary to the party’s core principles.

It reads, “We strongly condemn any form of violence, intimidation, or disruption in party activities” 

Furthermore, the party stated that all reported incidents will be investigated and individuals involved will be held accountable.

The party concluded by imploring its members to maintain respect, discipline, and unity for the duration of the elections.
