Sierra Leone’s Opposition Leader in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, has called on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education to ensure a fair and timely resolution of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results withheld from thousands of candidates.

Expressing concern over the 47,454 candidates whose WASSCE results have been withheld, Hon. Kargbo warned that the uncertainty surrounding their results could jeopardise their futures, particularly their prospects of gaining admission to tertiary institutions.

He urged the relevant authorities to clearly explain the reasons for withholding the results, ensure that affected cases are handled fairly and provide a clear timeline for resolving the matter.

While stressing the importance of safeguarding the integrity of public examinations, Hon. Kargbo said allegations of examination malpractice should be thoroughly investigated and that candidates should not be presumed guilty simply because their results have been withheld.

He also called on the authorities to engage universities and other tertiary institutions to explore possible admission arrangements for affected candidates, subject to their final results and the institutions’ entry requirements.

Hon. Kargbo emphasised the need for transparency and urgency, warning that prolonged uncertainty could disrupt students’ academic plans and delay their progression to higher education.

He urged WAEC, the Ministry and other relevant stakeholders to work towards a timely resolution that protects the credibility of the examination process while ensuring fair treatment for affected candidates.
