Sierra Leone’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice has formally discontinued the criminal proceedings against former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, ending the treason case that stemmed from the November 2023 failed coup attempt.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, the Attorney-General said the decision was made under Section 45 of the Criminal Procedure Act, 2024, exercising powers granted by the laws of Sierra Leone.

Koroma had been charged with treason and misprision of treason and was previously granted bail on medical grounds to travel abroad for treatment. The Attorney-General stated that, following the filing of the notice, the criminal proceedings are no longer before the court and Koroma’s bail has ceased with immediate effect.

The notice further stated that the former president is now free to return to Sierra Leone upon completing his medical treatment or at any time of his choosing.
