U.S. Ambassador Bryan Hunt has officially resigned from his post in Sierra Leone, citing family obligations as the reason for his early departure. In his resignation letter, Hunt explained that his fatherโs recent triple bypass surgery made it necessary for him to return home.
Hunt took up his role in Sierra Leone after being confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2023, and presenting his credentials on September 11, 2023. Over the past two years, he has been a visible and active figure in Sierra Leoneโs diplomatic and development landscape, working to strengthen U.S.โSierra Leone relations, promote democratic governance, and support programs aimed at security, health, and prosperity.
In his farewell note, Ambassador Hunt praised the dedication of his colleagues, writing: โIt has been the honor of my career to serve in Sierra Leone. While it pains me to depart sooner than expected, I am confident that the missionโs vital work will continue under strong leadership.โ
His resignation marks the close of a significant chapter in the partnership between the two nations. While his time in Freetown was shorter than anticipated, Hunt leaves behind a legacy of collaboration and commitment that has contributed to building stronger ties between the United States and Sierra Leone.
