The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has assured its members and supporters that reconciliation and unity remain at the heart of its agenda as it prepares for the road to the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Liberty Online TV’s Breakfast Show, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Moses Mambu, explained that the SLPP has taken a proactive approach to resolving internal challenges, particularly those that emerged after its recent convention and the disagreement involving the First Lady and the outgoing party chairman.
According to Mambu, the reconciliation process was initiated after elders of the party raised concerns about developments in Parliament. The Executive viewed this as its first major assignment, bringing stakeholders together to foster understanding and ensure that disagreements did not weaken the party. The reconciliation effort, he said, goes beyond addressing disputes and is instead laying a foundation for a stronger, more united SLPP. Elders have expressed their confidence by entrusting the future of the party to younger leaders, while the process itself has been conducted in an organized and structured manner rather than through traditional approaches.
The SLPP prides itself on being a party governed by rules and structures that stretch from the community level to the diaspora. Internal data suggests that the party currently commands a support base of about 4.1 million members, supporters, and sympathizers both in Sierra Leone and abroad. Mambu emphasized that political strength is measured by numbers and that the SLPP continues to consolidate its base.
On the question of flagbearer aspirations, the party’s position is that discussions or campaigns on succession are premature. All activities relating to the flagbearership have been suspended, with leaders urging members to remain focused on governance and the delivery of President Julius Maada Bio’s mandate. When the time for selection comes, the process is expected to be orderly, with the party confident it will produce a candidate acceptable to Sierra Leoneans.
Mambu further highlighted the SLPP government’s achievements under President Bio, particularly in education, where citizens have expressed satisfaction with the opportunities now available compared to the past. He stressed that the “Big Five Game Changers” remain the party’s priority, and that the leadership is determined to deliver results for the people.
The National Publicity Secretary concluded that the SLPP is a serious, systematic, and sober organization, far stronger than its rivals. He maintained that reconciliation is not only addressing present challenges but also strengthening the party’s foundations to ensure unity, stability, and readiness for the 2028 elections.
