Sierra Leone’s Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Sengepoh Solomon Thomas has confirmed that the President, H.E Julius Maada has ordered the Clerk of Parliament, Hon. Umarr Tarawally to proceed on leave as of June 20th, 2025, in response to the demands of the opposition.

He made this confirmation through a letter issued to the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, regarding concerns of the conduct of the clerk of parliament.

Recently, the opposition suspended their parliamentary duties, urging for their demands to be met for the immediate resignation of the clerk. Their concern was that the Clerk has contravened constitutional provisions for vying for a political position whilst serving as public servant.

According to the Speaker, following a thorough engagement with the President on the matter, a decision was reached for the Clerk to step aside temporarily while the President deliberates on the future of the Clerk’s position.
