FREETOWN, Sierra Leone – 4 February 2026: The All People’s Congress (APC) National Secretary General has issued a formal statement to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Sierra Leone Police, clarifying remarks he made on or about 31 January regarding the 2023 general elections.
In the statement, the APC National Secretary General emphasized that his comments were political opinions expressed in good faith, based on publicly available reports from both domestic and international election observation bodies. He clarified that the views he articulated were not personal or new, but reflected a long-standing and consistently maintained position of the APC.
“The APC has, since the conclusion of the 2023 elections, consistently expressed concerns regarding the conduct, transparency, and outcome of the elections, including allegations that the electoral process did not reflect the will of the people,” the statement reads.
The APC official further noted that the statement was made within the bounds of constitutional political discourse, emphasizing that no comprehensive, transparent, and disaggregated official election results had been conclusively published or validated, which continues to be a matter of public concern and debate nationally and internationally.
He rejected any suggestion that his comments were made with malice or criminal intent, stressing that they were political expressions protected under the Constitution, aimed at promoting democratic engagement rather than violence or hatred.
The statement reaffirmed his commitment to peace, the rule of law, and lawful democratic processes, while also noting that he had been detained by the Inspector General of Police in relation to the matter.
