His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has issued a series of strong directives aimed at intensifying the national fight against drug and substance abuse, particularly the growing menace of kush.
During a high-level meeting convened to discuss strategies for eliminating the drug crisis, President Bio called for a comprehensive review of all existing legislation related to drug and substance abuse. The review, he emphasized, should introduce tougher penalties, stronger enforcement mechanisms, and provisions for asset seizures from individuals and networks involved in the drug trade.
In a further move to strengthen judicial processes, the President also recommended the development of a new Practice Direction by the Honourable Chief Justice to guide court proceedings and ensure consistent and firm sentencing in all drug-related cases.
As part of a wider national response, President Bio has also ordered the establishment of a Special Security Unit made up of personnel from the Operational Support Division (OSD) and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF). The new unit will spearhead full-scale raids on drug peddling hotspots and carry out on-the-spot arrests of suspected offenders.
The President reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating the kush epidemic, protecting the nation’s youth, and restoring peace and safety in communities across the country.
