The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, has made a press release providing an update on the alleged landing of the unscheduled aircraft at the Freetown International Airport.
According to the authorities, the aircraft was travelling from Liberia to Mexico and was flying with a fictitious registration number that had some of its letters scratched off. They stated that the aircraft had no landing authorisation or communicated with the air traffic controllers on ground that day.
The update also provides that the aircraft in question did not travelled through any official airfield in Liberia.
Additionally, the four crew members—three Mexicans and one Hispanic—lied about having a radio malfunction prior to landing, and the captain also lied that he does not speak English but later spoke admitting receiving $20,000 US for the trip.
The crew members’ refusal to turn up their documentation to the security authorities for review is another detail included in the update.
The authorities concluded that nothing suspicious has been discovered so far and that the four crew members, along with two air traffic controllers, are under investigation by the Sierra Leone Police.
On September 19, at precisely 11:59 p.m., the purported unauthorised aircraft touched down at the Freetown International Airport. Prompting the state security forces to seize the said aircraft in order to conduct a comprehensive investigation.
