Reality TV star, Hawa Madiana Hunt has finally been released from prison on Tuesday, March4, 2025.
This came following the First Lady, Fatima Maada Bioβs public plea on Sunday, March 2nd, 2025 for the release of the reality TV Star. In her plea, the First Lady also revealed that she was never behind the arrest and detention of Hunt.
Huntβs legal representative, Rashid Dumbuya ESQ confirmed the news, announcing that she has been discharged of all count charges by the High Court of Sierra Leone.
Lawyer Dumbuya also added that all her documents will be handed over to her, making her a free woman. He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to all the parties involved in his clientβs release process including the state actors, prosecutors, the Judges and advocates.
However, the Lawyer’s Society, an organization of lawyers committed to serving as watchdog of Democracy, Good Governance and the protection of Human Rights, conveyed a position about Huntβs release, questioning the integrity of the rule of law in the country.
It reads, βWhile we celebrate the discharge and release of Hawa Hunt from detention, sadly we have observed that the βwordβ of politicians seems to carry more weight than the Rule of Lawβ. With proper application of the Rule of Law, Hawa Hunt would not have been arrested and detained for months in the first place.β
Hunt, the Canadian-Sierra Leonean was arrested in December 2024, on live television over a viral video surfaced online of her using vulgar language against the President and the First Lady of Sierra Leone.
Ever since her arrest, she was detained in the Female Correctional Center while facing charges of cybercrime, pursuant to the Cyber Security and Crime Rate of 2021, Act No. 7 of 2021 without bail.
Her prolonged detention sparked public outrage, citing human rights violations.
