In a recent announcement by the European Union (EU), the EU has provided approximately €200,000 funding relief for citizens affected by the recent floods in the country. In order to aid the 1,800 flood-affected households (12,600 people) in the four worst-affected districts, the EU says they are working with the Sierra Leone Red Cross to effect the funding. They plan to do this primarily through multipurpose cash transfers to help with emergency needs (food, water, sanitation, non-food items, etc.), health promotion, first-aid, and psychosocial support, as well as disaster-mitigating interventions.

Notably, this year’s raining season hits numerous areas with severe flooding, affecting the loss of homes and properties and impacting people directly.
The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) reports that as of September 23, 2024, there were about 27 flood incidents in significant areas of Sierra Leone, affecting 3,330 houses and 23,596 reports of people affected by floods.

In concurrent, the EU’s funding seeks to address the above records of flood victims targeting the four worst areas in the country as their overall contribution to the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
