In a press statement delivered earlier today, January 9, 2025, Archbishop Rev. Dr. Tamba Charles, the president of the Inter Religious Council Sierra Leone (IRCSL), reassured Sierra Leoneans of the council’s unwavering commitment to promoting safe motherhood across the country. He emphasized that the IRCSL recognizes the vital importance of ensuring the health and safety of mothers during pregnancy and childbirth.
However, the Archbishop also clarified that while the council strongly supports the goal of safe motherhood, it does not agree with the proposed methods currently being discussed to promote this initiative. The council voiced concerns about the approach being suggested, urging for an alternative that aligns more closely with the values and beliefs of Sierra Leonean society.
In his statement, Rev. Dr. Tamba Charles called for open dialogue and collaboration among all stakeholders to find a balanced solution that safeguards maternal health while respecting cultural and religious sensibilities. The IRCSL remains committed to working alongside the government, health professionals, and community leaders to ensure that the health and welfare of mothers are prioritized in ways that reflect the nationโs diverse values.
