South Sudan Enforces Temporary Ban on TikTok and Facebook Amid Regional Violence

In light of escalating violence in neighboring Sudan, South Sudanese officials have instituted a temporary ban on TikTok and Facebook, set to last for 90 days. This decision comes amid the ongoing conflict that erupted in April 2023 between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), which has led to a mass exodus of over a million people fleeing to South Sudan.

The South Sudanese government aims to curb the spread of graphic content depicting violence, particularly against women and children, which has been circulating on social media platforms. In an effort to protect its citizens from the disturbing imagery associated with the conflict, the government has directed telecommunications providers to suspend access to these services.

The National Communication Authority (NCA) underscored that the ban is a necessary measure to prevent the dissemination of violent content, referencing Sections 9(g)(i) and 34(6) of the National Communication Act of 2012. The NCA has expressed concern over videos showcasing brutal attacks, which could have a harmful impact on the mental well-being of South Sudanese citizens.

As the situation in Sudan remains volatile, the South Sudanese government is taking proactive steps to safeguard its population from the traumatic effects of the conflict, while also striving to maintain order within its borders.
