The Network Movement for Youth and Children’s Welfare (NMYCW-SL) has expressed serious concern over the increasing number of reckless Keke drivers plying across major streets of Western Rural District, especially along the Waterloo-Jui highway and nearby communities.
In the press release dated August 18, 2025, NMYCW – SL ha complained that the recent governmentβs announcement of reduction in transportation fare has increased overwhelming tension between passengers and drivers, claiming that the drivers have been adamant in following the new transportation price rates. The organization also say the price reduction conflicts has led to disregard for traffic regulations.
Furthermore, NMYCW – SL highlighted various other concerns surrounding Kekeh drivers, including overloadingβthat is taking up to five passengers instead of the permitted threeβ dangerous driving and over speeding. These actions, according to the organization, is putting passengers and pedestrians at risk.
Consequentially, the organization noted that the aforementioned issues have caused a number of accidents resulting in injuries and fatalities, hectic disruption of traffic along the Waterloo-Jui corridor and Tombo Highway Junction.
The organization has urged key stakeholders in the transportation sector to take an immediate action before the situation could escalate.
