The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) is currently filing an appeal to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after Sierra Leone’s U17 team, known as the Shooting Stars, was disqualified from competing in the ongoing WAFU U17 tournament due five of its players failing the Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) age verification test.

According to SLFA, the pre-tournament MRI tests were conducted at the ECOMED Advanced Medical Diagnostics hospital in Freetown, and all players passed the test. SLFA added that this came as a shock to them as this same procedure was used in Senegal in 2020 and Mauritania in 2022, and the team achieved a 100% pass rate.

Sierra Leone defeated the Gambia with a score of 3-0 on September 24, 2024, and advanced to the AFCON U-20 semifinals, the tournament’s qualifying standard, earning them a spot in the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations 2025 for the first time in history.

To confirm the accuracy of the results, the SLFA has filed an appeal to CAF, asking for the names of the players who failed the MRI and requesting that another testing be done in this regard. Additionally, the MRI test results of every player were also presented by SLFA to bolster their case.

The SLFA assures the general public that every effort will be made to ensure every player gets a fair chance to participate in the tournament.
